Probably around the time of Wild Bill Hickok.
He was a lawman/gunfighter who dropped his career to play Poker. He always used to sit in the seat at Nuttal & Mann’s ‘Saloon No. 10′ tavern with his back to the wall so no one could shoot him from behind.
One day his seat was taken so he was forced to sit in a seat with his back to the door.. unfortunately he got shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall with a 45 cal revolver. (the guy was drunk. it was said he shot him because Hickok offered him money to buy himself breakfast when he lost all of it playing poker…-_-)
hickok was holding in his poker hand a pair of Aces and eights, which today is known as the Dead Man’s Hand. ^^
Not helpful but it’s a little jeopardy trivia there. >_>
They still do that today. If you don’t think so just try it.
