Caribbean Stud Poker Rules

All the games we have looked so far involved betting against other players. But this game is different; here everyone plays against the casino or room which acts as a bank (dealer), paying out all winning bets. To win you have to beat the dealer’s hand, other player’s hands don’t make a difference.

First each player makes an ante (initial blind bet) and is dealt 5 cards face down. The dealer receives 4 cards face down and 1 card face up. Now each player decides whether to fold or play by looking at their cards, if they fold then their ante is lost but if they continue, they have to double their ante-bet.

Now the dealer reveals his hand, but he must have an A-k or higher in order to play his hand, if not the player is paid even money on the ante and also the additional bet is not lost (See the table for odds). If the player’s hand beats the dealer’s, the ante is paid at evens. However, if the dealer’s hand beats the player’s hand then both bets are lost.

Additional Bet Payout odds:

One pair or High card —> 1/1 (Even) Two pair —> 2/1

Three of a kind —> 3/1 Straight —> 4/1

Flush —> 5/1

Full House —> 7/1

Four of a kind —> 20/1

Straight flush —> 50/1

Royal flush —> 100/1

If the dealer and player play the same poker hand, then remaining cards are taken in to consideration. If all five cards are equal, the hand is void. Neither the ante nor the additional bet is lost. The ranking of suits makes no difference to the hand.

Here the odds are poor; a normal game of poker with seven players will have odds of at least 6/1 which is a great deal better when compared to the minimum odds in this game which is 1/1. Also the odds paid for additional bet are poor. Again there is no skill required and you rely too much on luck. Finally remember you have much better odds of winning money when you are playing for the pot.

Stud poker is any of a number of poker variants in which each player receives a mix of face-down and face-up cards dealt in multiple betting rounds. Caribbean stud poker is a casino table game with rules similar to five card stud poker. However, unlike standard poker games, Caribbean stud is played against the house rather than against other players. There is no bluffing or other deceptive techniques. The game rules and best strategies are easy to remember. Each seat at the table has a player’s layout and chip slot. A small LED lights up, when a chip that has been placed in the slot is allowed to fall through for collection by the dealer. This light should be watched as this indicates the jackpot bet. 

How to Play?

You place a bet in the “Ante” box in your table layout before any cards are dealt. The amount can be anything within the table limit. Optional progressive jackpot can also be played with each hand. For playing the jackpot one can place $1 chip, once all the players who want to take part in the jackpot put their chips, the dealer will press a button allowing all the chips to drop through the slots for collection. These chips drop and activate a LED which stays on until the hand is over to show the winner.

The dealer places five cards to all the players without showing the cards, and the dealer takes five cards showing one of them and by seeing that one card the players will decide whether to play or fold. If a player folds then he/she will lose the bet and if the player chooses to play then they have to wager exactly double the bet in the box (or ante). This is called “Call” bet.

Now, after all the players have decided what to do, the dealer will reveal his other four cards and he can compete with all the playing members provided he has at minimum an Ace with a King (and, of course, higher than that). Or else he will pay an even amount to the players; in this case the call bet is a “Push”. If a player has a higher card hand than the dealer then they win and get their Ante & Call bet. 

Progressive jackpot

To play the progressive jackpot, a player must make a side bet of $1 at the starting of the game. By paying the extra amount the player is agreeing that they will get a hand of cards that matches a flush or better. What so ever the outcome of the table game is, if the players cards matches to a flush or better, then the player will win the amount announced in the payout table. Players usually win 100% of the pot for a ‘Royal Flush’, 10% for ‘Straight Flush’ and a designated amount for ‘Four of a Kind’, ‘Full House’ or a ‘Flush’. This may vary from one casino to another. 

How Progressive Jackpot Works 

For every $1 bet, 71 cents goes into the jackpot and the casino keeps the other 29 cents. The contribution may vary. All payoffs are paid right out of the meter. Every time somebody hits a ‘Royal Flush’ the house contributes ten thousand dollars to the next jackpot. The house edge is just under the cut per bet because the casino puts up the initial $10,000 to start a new jackpot after someone wins the previous one. 

Caribbean Stud Strategy 

Raise with a pair or higher, fold with less than Ace/King, and raise on Ace/King if any of the following three rules apply. 

Raise if the dealer’s card is a 2 through Queen and matches one of yours.

Raise if the dealer’s card is an Ace or King and you have a Queen or Jack in your hand.

Raise if the dealer’s rank does not match any of yours and you have a Queen in your hand and the dealer’s card is less than your fourth highest card.

Caribbean Stud Poker Intro

It seems like only yesterday when this fun game started appearing in Casinos in the United States. As you might expect from the name, Caribbean Stud Poker got its illustrious start in the Caribbean. It eventually worked its way onto cruise ships and one day the game finally docked on U.S. shores.

This exciting game is now offered in just about every casino, both online and in the real world. It’s usually considered a party game, because, like Blackjack, everyone is playing against the dealer.

Caribbean Stud Poker is played on a Blackjack-style table and seats multiple players. If you’re playing the game online, you might be the only one playing-some online casinos are offering multi-player games now.

The layout for the game has three main betting areas. First, there’s the Ante spot, which is where your initial wager goes. Next there’s the Bet spot, which is why you bet to stay in the game-more on this later. Finally, there’s the progressive jackpot wager slot. When you drop $1 into this slot, you’re entered into the progressive jackpot.

Quick Game Play

In other articles, I’ll go over the game play and strategy in more detail, but for now, let’s run through the general game play of Caribbean Stud Poker.

Before the hand is played, you must enter a wager. The lowest betting limit I’ve ever seen in the real world is $5. You might find limits lower online. So, let’s imagine that you placed $5 on the Ante spot.

Next, you need to decide if you want to be entered into the progressive jackpot. If so, put $1 into the slot. You can’t be entered into the jackpot after the hand is dealt.

After all players have made these two moves, the hand is dealt. You’ll be given five cards. This game doesn’t have many big decisions. Unlike video poker, there are no draw cards, so these are the only five cards you’ll get. At this point, you need to decide if you think your hand will beat the dealer’s hand or not.

You can choose to fold now and lose your Ante wager, or you can stay in the hand and place a Bet wager. This new wager is equal to two times the Ante wager. So, if you made a $5 wager to start the hand, your Bet wager would be $10.

After all players have decided, the deal flips over his or her hand and bets are either taken or paid. At this time, any progressive winners are paid.

Most importantly, be brave enough to bet, raise or call. You will go nowhere if you do not know when and how to push your luck.
